Legend- Mata Jwalaji Temple (Mata Jwala Ji Temple- District Kangra, Himachal Pradesh)
|| Jai Maa Jwala Ji||
In the Satyug Era, Samrat Bhumi Chandra dreamt of Maa Bhagwati's Tongue falling over here. After being unable to find the Pindi, they made a small temple of Mata Bhagwati at Nagarkot in Kangra by the name of Maa Sati. After some time, a Gwala (Sheppard) of his regime informed him that there is a constant Jyoti of Maa Bhagwati running at this place. After making the temple at the Jyoti place, the king summoned 2 pandits of Bhochak Jaati from Shak Dweep and gave them the responsibility of this temple. The 2 pandits were Pdt Shridhar and Pdt Kamla Pati. Later on the Pandavas visited this mandir and prayed and this great place and got the bhawan made.
According to another legend, after Lord Vishnu's Chakra cut the abode of Maa Sati, Her Tongue fell at this place and disappeared in the earth. There was no inhabitance at this place but for a few sheppards (gwalas) who came here occasionally to feed their cows. One amongst these gwalas was amazed to notice that his Kapila named cow did not have any milk left in her after she returned from this place. The same happened many times in this dense forest area at that time. One day out of curiosity he followed his cow to know the truth. To his amazement, he noticed that an 8-9 year old girl reached his cow with her tongue out, kissed the face of the cow and then drank the milk. Upon calling THAT MIRACULOUS GIRL, She disappeared in the form of a flame. He immediately informed the same to King Bhumi Chandra after which he got the Maa Jwala Bhawan made. There after the name and fame of this place started spreading quickly.
At the time of mughal rule, once King Akbar tried to test the power of Maa Jwala, he did not believe in the powers of Maa Jwala and tried to extinguish this fire in various ways. In the process, he even got a river directed to this place, but Maa Bhagwati's Jyoti came up the water and got lightened above the water itself. Seeing this, Akbar realized his mistake and even Maa Jwala's powers. He then pleaded for forgiveness and even offered gold Chhatar for Maa Jwala Devi, which upon offering got dark because of Maa's Anger. This Chhatar is still lying in a case in the temple premises. This story is attached to unmatched devotedness of the great Dhyanu bhakt who offered his own head to Maa Jwala. Read the complete legend/ history of Maa Jwala in refernce to Dhyanu Bhakt and King Akbar.
